We were shocked to learn that the two “Stolpersteine” (stumbling stones) commemorating the siblings Ida and Albert Noack in Bergen on Rügen have been smeared with paint. In a year in which we celebrate 1,700 years of Jewish life in Germany, this desecration makes us particularly stunned. PRORA-ZENTRUM had the “Stolpersteine” (stumbling stones) laid by Cologne artist Gunter Demnig in 2007 as part of a school project.
Since then, every year in November, our association conducts city tours on the history of Jewish life in Bergen and on the island of Rügen with all 10th graders of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium in Bergen. These stones are a fixed station of our educational program. The city of Bergen is currently taking care of the cleaning, soon they will be visible again as in the picture.
