The state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has approved on 14.04.2021 the purchase of the building part of Block V for a symbolic price of 1 euro by the state, in which the new Education and Documentation Center on the NS and GDR history of Prora is to be built.

Education Minister Bettina Martin said in her ministry’s press release on the same day: “It is important that the building complex in Prora is not just a place of recreation for vacationers, but that space for remembrance and education is also created at this historically complex site. Especially for the young generation, dealing with these difficult chapters of German history is very important. I am pleased that in the future both schoolchildren from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and classes spending time in the neighbouring youth hostel will be able to actively engage with their history in the new Education and Documentation Center. Our joint responsibility is to do everything we can to ensure that there is never another dictatorship in Germany.”

Martin continued: “The decision of the state parliament is a strong signal for the educational work of the associations ‘PRORA-ZENTRUM’ and “Documentation Center” located there. They will now receive better framework conditions for their important work. I would like to sincerely thank the members of both associations for their great commitment and their work in the field of remembrance.

We are very pleased that this educational center will finally become a reality and we will continue to be available for the future educational and documentation center in Block V with our projects and research work on NS and GDR history as well as planning ideas. The umbrella association of both associations in Prora offers a good foundation for what’s ahead of us.
